Migraines are not your traditional headache

Migraine is a neurological condition characterized as frequent throbbing headaches that are often accompanied by other symptoms such as sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and vomiting. Migraine attacks can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and can be disabling, making it difficult to perform daily activities.

There is no cure for migraine, however there are treatment options that can help reduce the attack frequency and cure the accompanying symptoms. However, the available treatment options are limited and do not produce the same effect across patients.

How would the perfect Migraine Treatment look like then? Let’s hear it from Omar, an Engineer and a migraine patient living in the UAE. Omar has been suffering from Migraine since he was 16. Currently at 34, he has tried most of the available treatment options, but from his perspective as a patient there are still a lot of medical research that needs to be conducted in order to finally develop a migraine medication that is effective, convenient, and suitable for most patients.

Migraine’s impact on patients’ lives cannot be dismissed, however, due to inadequate awareness about Migraine, there are some stigmas surrounding the condition that needs to be debunked. That’s why, the Emirates Society of Neurology is in partnership with Pfizer to initiate an awareness campaign titled ‘Migraine Matters’ with an objective to raise awareness and promote public education on migraine and spread the word on the impact that it has on patients living with the condition.

This awareness campaign takes place during the month of June, which is known as the “Migraine Awareness Month” worldwide.
