A Public Awareness Campaign for Migraine

Did you know that Migraine remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in at least 50 percent of the patients? Hence, it becomes a necessity to bring awareness to the public on this debilitating condition. This is why the Emirates Neurology Society (EMINS) in collaboration with Pfizer have planned a public awareness campaign titled “Migraine Matters” in June to mark the ‘Migraine and Headache Awareness Month”. Dr. Mustafa Shakra, who is Consultant Neurologist at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in UAE, talks about the Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments of Migraine.

Migraine is a chronic brain disorder that is highly prevalent. Migraine is known to affect women more than men, however, it can be equally debilitating in both genders. Although the precise cause of migraines is unknown, it is believed that it is linked to irregular brain activity that can affect the brain’s blood vessels, chemicals, and nerve signals. Commonly, migraine patients experience headache pain with accompanying symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and other sensory disturbances.

Dr. Mustafa Shakra says “We know that there are multiple contributing factors in the pathogenesis of migraines however the exact mechanism is not well understood.  A person living with migraine has every aspect of their life being impacted. Taking care of yourself might help prevent migraines. If you are suffering from the symptoms, consult a headache specialist in order to confirm the diagnosis of migraine and treat your headache before it gets worsened.
